Around The World 2005

We "were" traveling around the world and we want to share part of this adventure with you on this blog. The updates have been quite late but we will put the trip until the end, so check once in a while. Some cities have an hiperlink to a .kmz file. That is a Google Earth location file. If you have Google Earth installed it will take you to the city when you click on its name.

Batur - Indonesia

4/29/05

Gunung Batur

We woke up at 3:15 am and started to walk at 3:45 am
It was not a difficult walk. It took us only 1:30 hour to make it to the top, which is 1700m high. Up there was completely clouded and we couldn't see anything, there was absolutely no view so no picture :(
We then passed by hot springs close to the summit where the locals come to get holy water and pray. In fact both the volcano and the lake Batur are considered a holy place since the lake is home of goddess Danur and it lays in the crater of mount Batur. It is also the largest lake in Bali.

We were back to the hotel at 9 am, had breakfast and left to tour around in east Bali. We went through many nice rice terraces.

We checked how the farmers work on the rice fields, a hell of hard work. Here a woman separates the rice grains from the rice plant.

Whole families are around the rice terraces.

We stopped to try salak (snake-skin fruit) and durian, a fruit that looks like a small jack fruit and smells terribly strong.
For lunch we stopped in a nice restaurant to try some more Indonesian dishes, seating on the floor.

After lunch we went to visit the Tirtagangga Royal bathing pools.

We then made a stop in a small fishing village where the beach is covered with black sand coming from volcanic rocks.

After we also stopped on a white sand beach to swim and relax.

To finish the day we watched a Balinese dance.

Kecak is the one of the most famous of the Balinese dances. It originated from another dance chore called Sanghyang, an old ritual dance also called Trance dance which helps to maintain the well-being and health in the village. For the kecak dance, the people chant at distinctive kachak accompaniment. It is a story about a prince Rama who' exiled to the forest with his wife Sita. She gets kidnapped by a demon called Rahwana. Rama destroys the army of the evil and gets his wife back and returns home happily.

We went back to Kuta at night, to catch a flight to Sumatra on the next day. We found a nice and cheap Thai restaurant and after dinner we wandered around in the fancy side of Kuta. There are many bars frequented by the young party animals. We also saw the memorial for the victims of the bomb that killed hundreds of tourists in Bali.
