Bromo - Indonesia

Before we got to Cemora Lawang we had to spend the night in Probolinggo, because we arrived too late, 11:30 pm, and the public buses weren't running anymore. So we had the choice of paying 125,000 Rupiahs for a private car or wait until 6 am and jump in a public bus for 10,000 each. It wasn't hard to choose, but the problem was where to stay. We spoke to a couple of people and one of them offered his office, tourist information, which was just across the street from the bus station, perfect! We had one nice wooden bench each to sleep a few hours and were again on the road to Bromo. We arrived around 9:30 am. After lunch we went to a view point, one hour away from the lodge.
Bromo is very different from Merapi; it is much lower (2392m) and it stands out from a big dead plain. The plain looks like a mixture of sand and ashes. There are also traces of lava flows.
Behind Bromo, there is a much bigger volcano called Semeru, 3676 meters high, also active. Every once in a while, it throws a chunk of smoke very high in the sky.
From where we were, it would have taken 3 days to hike to Semuru, so it was out of question since we wanted to go to the Meru Betiri National Park and we also had to meet Flavien in Denpasar, Bali, on Apr-26th, so there was absolutely no time for it.
At the end of the day we went to the Bromo crater, crossed the plain and reached the base. There we found a convenient stair that goes all the way to the top, easy walk and, ...
... nice view. That's how it looks inside.
The next morning we left for Sukamade in the Meru Betiri National Park at the east end of Java.
