El Calafate - Argentina
21/10/05
We woke up in the bus, it was still driving. The sun was already up and I checked the time, it was 6 A.M. From the first seat on the second floor we could see the road stretching far on the horizon, but no other vehicles. On the side of the road there was only empty fields.
We spent the whole morning watching that same landscape until we got to Rio Gallegos, at 12 P.M, a city on the other side of the continent, by the Atlantic Ocean. There we had to get off and change bus. We waited for one hour before boarding again, this time to reach our final destination, El Calafate.
El Calafate was a very small, but very touristic, town. There we found a hostel close to the bus station where we met the owner. Quickly after checking in we scheduled a visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier for the following morning and rented bikes to wander around for the rest of the day.
Yep, after bus riding 1,200 kilometers we went biking!
The place is a birds watching paradise. Right by the town there is a lake ...
... and a birds sanctuary where you can see many different species.
Since there was a kitchen in the hostel, before heading back from the lake we stopped by the supermarket to get some steaks and Argentinean wine for dinner.
